Gastroenterology
Gastroenterology This specialty concerns the treatment of patients with a wide range of gastro-intestinal conditions. Conditions we treat include: cancer of the gastrointestinal tract cirrhosis colitis Crohn's disease gluten allergy heartburn hepatitis irritable bowel syndrome pancreatitis ulcer-like pain Investigating a bowel problem can involve many types of tests including blood samples, multi-slice CT, MRI, ultrasound, PET scanning and endoscopic examination. These include gastroscopy, colonoscopy, enteroscopy, liver and pancreas ERCP and endoscopic ultrasound. We use a multi-disciplinary approach involving gastroenterology and other specialties such as GI or gastrointestinal surgery; HPB or hepato-pancreato-biliary surgery; oncology, and renal medicine. This is because a disease may involve many organs, or a gastrointestinal complication might arise in another condition. The hospital also carries out HPB surgery for diseases affecting the liver, pancreas and bile ducts. We treat patients with all forms of kidney disease, with or without impairment of kidney function. In addition, care is provided for renal transplant recipients, in both the acute post-operative period and in long-term follow-up.
