BGS Beta-Gamma-Service GmbH & Co. KG

BGS Beta-Gamma-Service GmbH & Co. KG provides industrial services using accelerated electrons and gamma rays since 1981 and is therefore one of the pioneers in the industry. BGS is a specialised service provider in the field of plastic processing through irradiation cross-linking as well as radiation sterilisation of sensitive goods such as medical products, in-vitro diagnostics, packaging materials or consumables for laboratories and biotechnologies. Besides its headquarters in Wiehl, BGS operates two additional branches in Bruchsal (near Karlsruhe) and Saal an der Donau. As an independent medium-sized company, BGS is market leader in Germany in the field of radiation technology and therefore a Hidden Champion. The Managing Director is Dr. Andreas Ostrowicki.

Application fields for beta and gamma irradiation

The use of beta and gamma rays destroys pathogenic microorganisms, moulds and spores fast, reliably and in an environmentally friendly manner. Radiation sterilisation technologies are applied to products of medical technology and biotechnology, pharmacy and research as well as food packaging, raw materials for the cosmetics industry, and a wide range of imported consumer goods (toys, textiles, etc.). Radiation sterilisation makes the products safe for their intended use without using chemicals. As a second pillar, various types of plastic materials are refined using irradiation cross-linking with beta and gamma rays: By applying this method, chemical reactions are triggered in the plastics, enabling the molecules to re-bond and cross-link.  This gives inexpensive commodity plastics and technical plastics the mechanical, thermal and chemical properties of high-performance plastics. After the irradiation cross-linking, the products are able to be used under conditions, which they would not withstand otherwise. Such an “upgrading” may be used, for example, in the automotive and electronics industry as well as in the mechanical engineering sector, for cables, wires, pipes, and tubes. Through the use of beta and gamma rays in accordance with individual requirements, BGS helps to optimise the material properties of plastics and open up new application fields for established raw materials.
